WHARE KEA CHALET

Luxury mountain chalet based ski touring!

This is a VERY comfortable way to experience excellent ski touring right next to the Mt Aspiring National Park. Helicopter up to the Chalet on day one, spend three days skiing around the hut, then fly back to Wanaka.

Nestled amongst the peaks of the Southern Alps, at 1750 metres (5700ft) in the Albert Burn Saddle, the Chalet sits on the edge of the Mount Aspiring National Park with astounding views of Mt. Cook and Mt. Aspiring with its tumbling glaciers.

Not to be confused with New Zealand’s typical alpine huts, Whare Kea Chalet offers an elevated experience – where comfort is paramount, without detracting from the rugged wilderness, the chalet provides:
Two double bedrooms
Spacious loft
Central heating
Power
Large windows framing incomparable views.

** FREE TRIP CANCELLATION IF THE WEATHER IS BAD

Designed to maximise the opportunities of the incredible location whilst minimising the impact on the environment, the building’s roof holds snow for insulation and solar cells for power, contributing to Whare Kea Chalet’s green credentials.

Recently Mark and some friends invited me on a trip to Whare Kea Chalet, and I’m very glad I accepted. Having ski toured extensively in NZ and all around the world, including some special places such as the Antarctic Peninsula and Greenland, this trip would rate as my top ski tour experience. The terrain, snow conditions, views and accommodation were all world leading. After dropping off our supplies at the Chalet, we were heli dropped approximately 10km away onto a sun soaked peak at 9am and spent the next 6 hours making our way down and up excellent runs until reaching our Chalet on the Albert Burn Saddle mid afternoon. The Chalet itself must be the best of its kind in NZ and for very remote accommodation is five star luxury. It is certainly not the type of Alpine hut we are used to. Like many Kiwis I thought I had to travel overseas to experience this standard of ski tour and accommodation, but I now find we have it right here on our home turf in Aotearoa.

We have just finished a wonderful ski touring trip with guide, Mark Sedon, based at Whare Kea Chalet in the Albert Burn Saddle, Southern Alps.
This would have to be the best winter snow experience in New Zealand. The terrain and snow conditions were excellent. Mark Sedon provides very friendly experienced guiding combined with a wealth of knowledge about the area.We always felt safe and exceptionally well looked after. And to cap this off we stayed in the luxurious Whare Kea chalet with panoramic views of Mt Aspiring Mt Cook and Mount Earnslaw. It was a magical experience to watch the sun setting and rising on the surrounding mountains. We would jump at the chance to have another trip there with Mark.
